Bella couldn’t get herself down off the couch like she used to. She needed to be gently lifted and placed on the floor whenever she wanted water, food or just wanted to explore. Bella had developed hip dysplasia over the years which we were told was common in Yorkshire Terriers.

Bella is my mom’s beloved Yorkie and I spent my early adult years living with her, seeing her run and play as a youthful puppy, and even though I am out of the house now, it still pains me to see how her mobility has diminished.

I know how much Bella means to my Mother and my family so I wanted to do something to help. I bought a few different joint supplements for dogs but one stood out above the rest. The following is my experience and review of that supplement.

About The Product

Cosequin Joint Supplement comes as a chewable treat. The treats are made up of a proprietary blend of ingredients that are supposed to help your dog’s joint health. Some of those ingredients include methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), chondroitin and glucosamine.

And if some of those ingredients sound familiar to you, that is no mistake. MSM, chondroitin and glucosamine are all proven ingredients that have been shown to improve human joint health.  If you take joint supplements, those same ingredients are more than likely in them.

We got the chicken flavor treats for Bella and she has no problem eating them. My mom gives her one every day after her dinner and we have seen a marked improvement in her movements.

She no longer walks with a hitch in her stride, she is able to go for longer walks and she can get herself down off the couch.

What we Like About Cosequin Joint Supplement

First off, we like that the same ingredients that are used in human joint supplements are present in Cosequin Joint Supplement. We like the idea of giving Bella the same kind of care we would give to ourselves.

There are also marine lipids found in the Cosequin Joint Supplement formula which are a rich source of omega -3 fatty acids. Omega-3’s are probably not enough to heal joint discomfort on their own but they are a good backup ingredient. Plus Omega-3’s improve the sheen and health of Bella’s coat too.

But perhaps what my mom and I like the most about Cosequin Joint Supplement is that it’s easy for Bella to take. We did try capsule-form supplements for her in the past and it was almost impossible to get her to take them.

So even though those capsule supplements were promising, in the end it didn’t mean anything when our dog wouldn’t even ingest them.

What we Don’t like About Cosequin Joint Supplement

One of the things we don’t like about Cosequin Joint Supplement is that it contains some unnatural ingredients like cellulose and other flavoring components. While this doesn’t seem to bother Bella at all, it does give us some concern.

Pros & Cons

• Easy to chew treats
• High quality ingredients
• Contains chondroitin which is naturally found in the fluid of knee joints
• Also helps with coat and nails
• Saw marked improvement in just 3 weeks
• Come in capsule form as well

Cons:

• Some unnatural ingredients
• Not beneficial for advanced joint problems
• Your dog may not like the flavor
• May cause bowel irritation for some dogs

Last Thoughts

Every dog is different. A joint supplement that works for one may not work for another. Bella is a small dog (around 10 pounds) and Cosequin Joint Supplement has worked to improve her hip. Perhaps for larger breeds, you would need something stronger.

But for Bella, Cosequin Joint Supplement has worked amazingly. It is an affordable supplement that is easy to give to our dog. We definitely recommend it for your small breed dog and it would probably at least be a good starting point for your large dog as well. Give it a try!
